I have an acre in Bryan with oak trees and St. Augustine grass. There appear to be no organic yard care stores. The soil is hard as a rock on the surface and dry as the desert below. Suggestions for shopping etc?
I've never had such a large yard before and am anxious about cost also.
Thanks, Melissa |

Melissa,
Remember that humate and molasses are the two most basic and cost effective soil amendments you can start with. Check with a farm co-op to see what their prices are. A 50 lbs. bag of humate is usually pretty affordable, and 100 lbs. would be a great start on your acre. Basic organic fertilizers and horticultural cornmeal are excellent things to use on a St. Augustine lawn, and if you mix and apply them twice a year, spring & fall, you'll get lots of bang for your buck. My St. Augustine loves it.
For things like seaweed, Medina products, orange oil, etc. (many in gallon size) you do have an organic section in the Lowe's there in Bryan on Freedom Blvd.
Anyone else?
Hope that helps!

Dear Kathe,
Thanks for the info. I have found The Producers Garden Center, which is relocating in Feb. to the main store campus, and am delighted to report they carry Rabbit Hill Farms products plus quite a few other items including Garrett Juice. They are in far north Bryan on Texas Ave. The Lowe's carried only one organic fertilizer when I bought in July and no other products. Home Depot had none of anything.
I am looking forward to going organic on this yard and hope the results will encourage others to go organic too! Thanks again for the info. and encouragement.

| Don't forget to check the feed stores. I get my cornmeal and dry molasses from a feed store at a good price. They don't stock it but can put it on their regular order each week. Here are some feed stores in your area http://yellowpages.superpages.com/listings.jsp?SRC=msn&CB=1&R=D&STYPE=D&C=&CID=00000522310&cbdt=Animal+Feed&catID=12823&T=&S=&PS=15&RT=Bryan&RS=TX&RR=20&OO=1&Expand=Y&search=Find+It |
