The best type of bird feeder depends on which species you are tyring to attract.

Platform feeders located close to the ground attract sparrows and juncos.

Hopper feeders are easy to use and can be used with a variety of seeds. The easy seed access makes them popular with many species, which sometimes includes grackles, starlings and squirrels.

Tube feeders are popular with goldfinches, titmice, cardinals and a variety of other species. They have the advantage of being less popular with larger species like grackles, and if in a squirrel-proof design, can help protect the seed from hungry squirrels.

Seed socks (filled with Nyjer) are great for goldfinches and do not attract birds like house sparrows and starlings.
