I have never seen a Rufous until a couple of months ago when a male showed up at my feeder, and he is still here feeding today! We have icicles on the roof, but fortunately the necter has not frozen yet.
I'm wondering if there is anything I can put out for him for protein to help him survive temperatures in the teens tonight and tomorrow. He seems to be in no hurry to fly south for the winter! |

Thanks! I did some research after I posted, and found that it is not uncommon for hummers to winter in colder areas and that they can survive very cold temperatures. I know that this is quite controversial, but I also read about making a more concentrated necter when it is really cold so that they can get more carbs while expending less energy.
Our little fella survived the two nights in the teens, and is still here. It looks like I will be keeping my feeder up all winter, unless he decides to leave! He doesn't seem to be bothered by all of our gold finches, either. I also found that the necter won't freeze until the temperature dips below 27*, so most nights I will be able to leave it outside. |
