Hi all - need your input for appling powdered Corn Gluten Meal. The literature I have read states to apply CGM between Sept 15-Oct 15. However, timing is key...are these dates still OK considering the hot summer we had? What "signs" do I need to look for to start the application?

Ciao,

It is a wide window of time in the spring and in the fall. Some folks have had success with an application of 10 lbs per 1000 square feet then another application of same, two weeks later.

Since it might be a little late now, you can spray your entire lawn between Christmas and New Years (when and if your lawn is dormant) with the vinegar herbicide. It will not harm the woody parts of plants & trees.

If you have not yet fertilized this fall, go ahead and apply it at 20 lbs per 1000 square feet as it is a great fertilizer. However, if you plan to do an application in the early part of next year, fertilize with something else. It's best to mix it up and use different organic fertilizers. This will give your soil a balanced diet.

I'm moving and the yard is in pretty good shape, to have been vacant several months. So, do you mean that if I use corn gluten now, I should wait until Feb or so to use molasses? I've been taught to mix them together.

You can mix the two together and apply at the same time. It is just good to not use the same fertilizer over and over again. There is a lot to be said about variety (the spice of life). Much like the problems caused by creating a monoculture, using the same fertilizer again and again is not such a good thing. Biodiversity is good. Diversity in your fertilizers, as long as they are organic, is good, too.
