How big are they supposed to be?

I was at lowes getting some compost and mulch and I noticed these big oak leaves, about 10 inches long and 6 inches wide (not all of them). I wasn't familiar with it so I went ahead and checked the label. it says Chinkapin oak. I've never seen them like that on chinkapin oak in the past. I asked a person that works there about it and he thought it was unusual as well. He thought about buying it because of unusual leaf size but I bought it right away!

You might try this as a reference.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinkapin_oak

Looks like it might be a chinkapin but it might be a chestnut oak also. The site says that chestnut oak leaves can get slightly larger than a chinkapins.

Or hybrid of bur-chink, who knows?

I looked up chestnut oak and they grow way out east so it's unlikely.

I always walk by trees at lowes or home depot or wherever and i've never seen their leaves this big. There's another one with large leaves from same place that i got this tree. They had chinkapin oak in 10 or 15 gallons container and the leaves are smaller or rather normal sized.

Looking at the picture of the entire tree looks much like Chinkapin Oak except, of course, with bigger leaves. I'm pretty sure that the tree will be a good tree anyways. You have, I guess, a super tree. I know that chinks and burs hybrid according to some references. It is not a chestnut oak or a swamp chestnut oak. They won't make it here, anyways.

I now know what the tree is!! It is a Japanese Emperor Oak Quercus dentata. I saw one at the Ft Worth Botanic Gardens. The leaves are indeed huge. They are as big or bigger than leaves of bur oaks. It is native in Japan, China, Korea. In its native home, it grows around 50-80 tall and (I guess :?: ) as wide. So, enjoy your treasure.

I found Q. dentata trees at Petal Pusher (formerly Redenta's) in Cedar Hill!

Do you really think Lowe's would unknownly sell Q. dentata?
