I have an animal that has dug a burrow under my back patio and I'd like to identify it as well as find a way to deter it. I've never seen anything like it before. It's about the size of a large cat but I think it has short legs. The fur is black with a brown stripe down the back and a circular brown stripe on the tail. It's tail is bushy, similar to a squirrel, but it doesn't move like a squirrel. I've only seen it once, walking up my driveway, and it moved a lot like a cat when it's crouched down and closing in on a bird, somewhat quick but smooth and purposeful. My sons saw it one evening going into it's hole and they are the ones who told me about the brown stripes. I don't think it's nocturnal since my boys saw it go into the hole around 8:30pm and I saw it going away from my house around 6:00am. Does anyone have any idea what it might be and how I can get it to move on? Cayenne pepper didn't have any effect on it.

It sound like a ring tail cat but I haven't seen one in years. I have a live trap and live near you in McKinney. PM me and I might be able to help.

This creature doesn't look anything like the pictures of ringtails I've seen. It seems to be gone now anyway. We filled in the burrows during the day and, since my boys always just pee in the yard when they're playing, we've had them go and pee where the burrows were. I don't know if this is what did it or not. If it comes back I may need to borrow your trap. Thanks for the offer!
