If you can get a copy of this month's Smithsonian magazine, I HIGHLY recommend the article beginning on pg. 96... "What's Eating America", by Michael Pollan.
A history of hybridized corn and how it has become ubiquitious; and also how this crop consumes more fertilizer than any other. A brief description of the synthetic nitrogen manufacturing process; also notes how this chemical is harmful to the environment.
One I'll definitely keep for future reference. I think this would make a great topic for a future broadcast.
