When do you plant St. Augustine grass?

When do you plant St. Augustine grass?
I have an area under the shade of 2 overlapping trees that does not get enough sun for bermuda. What is the best brand of St. Augustine?

You can sod St Aug any day of the year. I prefer to not do it on rainy, hot, or freezing days. Be sure you roll it down to make good contact between the sod and soil.

I was planning on planting little sprigs, not sod.
Can you plant them now?

What is a good hardy brand?

i don't think sprigs work too good plus i don't think any places sell them anyway. Plugs would be better. Go to sodsolutions.com and look up for places that you can get Sapphire variety. They spread rapidly compared to Del Mar (very slow and i see them at lowe's for some reason), Palmetto or Raleigh (commonly sold). I think Rod's Farm is the place you talk to about finding a place that they deliver to in your area. I asked that place where I could order Sapphire and they told me of a local landscape business they have contact with and order grass from them to cut down on delivery fee. You can't really order directly from sod farm because they prefer to deliver full load which is like 18 pallets and I needed only 6 pallets. One pallet is 450 square feet for about 130 dollars.

When I lived in Southern California I planted Raliegh St. Augustine and it worked really well; grew in very little sunlight.

My neighbor suggested Palmetto because it freezes around here in the winter for several weeks at a time.

Hewitt is just south of Waco.

I have palmetto in the backyard and sapphire in the front yard. I thought sapphire held up better in the summer than Palmetto. You live further south than me ( I live about 20 miles south of dallas) so it shouldn't be a problem with the cold weather. Palmetto might stay green longer but i'd rather take summer performance when it rains less and get miserably hot...
