dormant grass

I want to plant some St. Augustine grass right now in a new area of the property. I will have to buy dormant grass. My question is whether the dormant grass will come back as I begin my regular fertilizing or do I need to do something now.

Adding a thin layer of compost to the top of the sod after planting is all that necessary now, but add some lava sand and greensand when time and money allow.
