While traveling HWY 31 south to Waco I noticed smaller birds chasing a larger bird that appeared to be a juvenile bald eagle. Size is hard to judge going 65 miles down the highway but I know it was a bird of prey with a light head and other white flashes as it was evading its harrassers. I saw a bald eagle in Oklahoma a few years ago, what a thrill. I hope to see more in the future.

Also a few weeks ago traveling a gravel back road I was in the car with my four year old and I saw to the right a large barn owl perched on a fence. I stopped and reversed so we could get a good look. It stuck around long enough for us to oooh and aaaah over him before taking flight. How cool!

Bald Eagle populations have been growing, thanks to the controls placed on pesticides. They are doing so well they may soon be removed from the endangered species list.

A few days ago there was a flock of cedar wax wings in our redbed tree! I had to look up what they were. So pretty! Yellow breasts, grey-brown bodies & 'tufts'.

My family spends a lot of time near Athens, TX (also on HWY 31) and have seen Bald Eagles recently on a number of occasions. We just started seeing these marvelous eagles late last year. In all the years that we have been visiting the area regularly, this is the first period of time that we have ever seen Bald Eagles! Incredible.
