Does anyone have thousands of flying insects coming out now in the late afternoon as the sun sets? I caught a few and they look like miniature mosquitoes (juveniles?). Although I have not been bitten.
I am pretty sure they are mosquitoes and I am planning on wasting them with bioganics, but I wanted to double check in the forum to make sure. I don't want to knock out any beneficials... |

| Yes I have noticed them too but am not sure what they are. I haven't been bitten either. I would not waste any product on them unless you are starting to get bit by them even if they are mosquitoes. |

| I'm being eaten alive! Help! How do you control them, I don't like using toxins on my skin as a repellent, what else can I use? Someone mentioned Vanilla? |

The flying insect that moe and sandi are talking is a Crane fly. They are a nuisance but are harmless. My chickens and turkeys love them so I do too.
Brenda, do a search on this site for mosquitoes and you will find plenty of info.

I have usually had real bad luck with mosquitoes in the past. I have a shady backyard, with not much of a breeze in the summer.
This year I am being proactive. I snuck over the fence into my neighbors yard at night and tossed a couple of 'mosquitoe dunks' into his stagnant pond.
So far I have not been bitten yet, but I know it is still early in the season.
If things get way too out of hand I usually use a garlic/pepper spray, but you kind of have to do it regularly.
One year I used 'bioganics' a couple of times, but now that I have been organic for about four years I have a ton of beneficial insects that I do not want to lose. |
