Scop's Owl?

I have some digital pictures of two owls I have in my back yard during different times of the year. I think they are Scops Owls, but I am not 100% sure.

I do not see a way to attach photos in the forum.

Is there someone I can email them to that might be able to confirm?

go to a free website like www.ofoto.com and post you images. Then "share" the album by sending it to your own email address. Be sure and check the box that allows people to see the image without logging in. The copy/past the URL of your link to this section of your response.

I am also looking forward to seeing the owl images. Scop's Owls are very unlikely but they do have wings.

How adorable! I'm envious because I have never seen an owl in the "wild" and think they are very cool.

Yes we like them very much. And it is amazing how close we can get to them (not too close though). I like to give them their space.

There is also a great horned owl lurking around here somewhere. He used to perch on my neighbors' houses around me. I have not seen him in about a year or so, but I heard him hooting late Saturday night. He is huge! Very impressive wingspan...

Nice photos. I think they are Eastern Screech Owls.

Eastern Screech Owls have both the red and gray color phases as in your photoraphs. Both colors will show up in the same brood.

The Western Screech Owl was split from the Eastern Screech Owl a few years ago. They look very similar, but interestingly enough, there is not a red phase of the Western Screech Owl.

I did a search on the web for the eastern screech owl and listened to their calls. If anyone else out there wants to hear what they sound like check out this link:

The first time I heard the whinny call it kind of freaked me out. (I.e. "What in the ____ was that???) It took me about a year to figure out I had owls! Nevertheless, I'm glad to have them.
