Is there a poisonous variety of wild onions? If so, how does one know the difference between poisonous and edible?
I have thousands of them, and I have always either mown over them or pulled them and tossed them. They look like shallots and smell like shallots.

If they smell like garlic or onions, they are edible but be careful. A similar looking plant called crow poison is toxic. There's a pretty good explanation of the difference in Plants for Texas book.

Many thanks. They do smell like onions. I don't have Plants for Texas. I guess I should get it before I try one. I could not find anything on the internet that gave me any confidence.

Pirate-
Go to Google and just above the line you type into you will see the word image. Click on image and then type in crow poison, you will see dozens of pictures.
