Goldfinch on hummingbird feeder.

I have not seen a Goldfinch in 3 weeks. This morning a male Goldfinch was in my backyard but not on the Nyjer feeder, instead he was on the hummingbird feeder. He spent 15 minutes picking around then flew up in a tree. I tried to point him in the right direction for Nyjer but he just looked at me like I was the nut.

I'm hearing nestlings chirping in the birdhouses. Already have friends with baby Bluebirds in theirs.

I have about 6 bluebird boxes out and three of them have babies. I also cut a log in two, hollowed it out and glued it back together with a 1 1/4 inch hole. Within 3 days a chickadee started nesting. I'm not quite as happy about the house finches taking over the previous years barn swallow nest but they will find another spot.

Tony, are you in a regular urban neighborhood or do you have land? I have tons of bird vaireties in my backyard but can't even convince a wren to nest in the wren house.

I'm on a 10 acre organic farm in McKinney. We have wrens but they stay mostly near the creek behind our house.
Wrens seem occupy both ends of the spectrum. Secretive and elusive, and a bird that will nest in the kitchen if a door is left open long enough. It is one of my favorite birds.

Mine too. They seem to have a very interesting personality. My niece had one nest in her mailbox, as well a friend of mine. I was so jealous. I also noticed that the woodpecker activity really dropped of once the weather warmed up. Is that pretty normal? We used to have 3 or 4 different kinds constantly running up and down the Silver Maples but I rarely see them now.

It could be because the females are incubating eggs so you are only seeing half as many. Once the leaves are full it will also be harder to notice them.
