can wind damage seedlings and new transplants?

...I am posting this in several areas because I need as much advice as possible...hope it isn't annoying :oops:

I know that trees here in texas seem to stay 'short', which seems to be a function of the wind acting as a limiting factor. I live on an open, old pasture with a slight hill facing south. it is very windy. does anyone have any thoughts on whether this might be keeping everything from growing? row cover is not really an option, we have too much space under cultivation ...

how do farmers in texas ever get corn (or anything) grown in open areas to grow?!?!? :shock:

Try planting a cover crop in the fall (Austria Peas or Winter Wheat, etc). In February, you will need to till strips perpendicular to the prevailing wind. This will act like a wind break. Allow enough distance between the rows for your transplants or seeds. Always plant corn in blocks, this will help with pollination and protection from the wind. Keep in mind some cover crops can encourage non beneficial insects and could cause problems for the spring crops.
