Last spring I planted a burr oak in my yard. Everything has been going great until it was time for the new leaves to come out this year. The baby leaves turned brown starting at the edges and died. Any idea what could be causing this?

Could be several things, but maybe the dying leaf tips is the prime clue.
Generally, when a plant dies back from the tips, [branches and/or leaves] the cause is either too much or too little water.

You know what's been going on, think about:
a] Too much or too little rain or irrigation.
b] Poor drainage, either surface or vertical.
c] Possible roots circling or girdling.
d] General soil conditions.

For more on [a] or [b], there is much discussed on these forums, including my topic "One Inch Myth"

For more on [c], see the DD's lesson on planting trees, or "Circling Roots~..." elsewhere in this forum, etc.

And [d] is why we're all here.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

Take care.
Craig
