I've seen them a couple weeks ago and didn't think they were really shantung maples! I thought they looked more norway maple (a lot bigger size leaf) and even sugar maple (looked pretty similar to my caddo sugar maples). Also the central leaders were chopped off. They didn't have those unique new leaves ( a trait that is a must).
I have to admit that I got one from Lowe's last year but I made sure it was actually shantung maple with those unique "purpleblow" leaves and even compared it to Shantung Maple 'Fire Dragon' from Metro Maples that I have two growing in my lawn. They both look really similiar so I'm satisfied. |

| How's the Fire Dragon doing? Good looking tree? Is it smaller than a normal Shantung? |

Fire Dragon is doing great. It's growing a bunch right now. The leaves are a tad bit smaller than the regular shantung maples even the one from Metro Maples. The regular shantung maple I got from Lowe's last year is growing like weed right now probably due to the fact that it's on the exposed south side of corner lot so it gets a lot of sun and quicker soil warm up compared to the northeast area where Fire Dragon is located. I bought two more fire dragon and one regular shantung this past spring so that makes it 5 shantung maples and 2 caddo maples. In about 5 years, they should give me a specatular fall color show!

**** DON'T BUY THEM AT LOWE'S IN WAXAHACHIE AND MANSFIELD (PROBABLY REST OF THEM IN DALLAS-FT WORTH) THAT THEY ARE CURRENTLY SELLING AS SHANTUNG MAPLE! IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED THAT THEY ARE NOT SHANTUNG MAPLE. EVEN LOWE'S KNOWS THAT BUT DIDN'T CARE. **** |

Caddo maples were around 2.5 to 3 feet tall when they were planted. One was planted last summer and another was planted over the winter. Each has put on about 6 inches of growth. I don't imagine they'd do much during first year or two while they grow roots but the smaller trees, the quicker establishment, the sooner they will grow faster and larger.
Shantung maple is faster growing at least when they are young. I am not fairly sure just how big they will get. It ranges from 20 to 50 feet!
Caddo will be around 40-60 feet tall depending on where it is being grown. More land space probably means bigger trees due to larger root system.
Personally, I think shantung maple is nicer looking maple than Caddo. Shantung maple gives you nice foliage from spring to fall (reddish new leaves throughout growing season, nice fall color - regular ones usually have yellow while fire dragon is red every fall). Caddo is a c*** shoot, you just don't know till fall. Apparently, I got yellow leaves on one caddo maple. Not sure about the other one. I won't know for another 6 months... |
