|
|
I've googled for every possible reference for size of shantung maple and almost all state that they grow to be 25-35 feet...
I was shocked to see that Howard Garrett's old post from year 2004 saying that they can get to 60 feet tall according to Dr Carl Whitcomb!!! I can't seem to find any infomation regarding Whitcomb's shantung maple trees on his tree farm. I wanted to email Dr Whitcomb but I couldn't find his e-mail address at all to confirm the size of his shantung maple trees.
Why such discrepancy for the size??? |

Howard and I went to a conference at the FW Botanical Garden several years ago with various forestry people presenting. Dr. Whitcomb had slides of many of the trees on his farm, including 50 foot Shantung maples. Since then, I know Howard has been to his farm but I don't have an update on how much they have grown.

| Genetic freak shantung maples grown by whitcomb or people are plainly wrong about the size? That is the question... I have 5 shantung maples so I guess I'll find out if I stay here long enough... |
