I have a Western Schley pecan that I started from a seedling I pulled from a flower bed at my parents place. The tree is now 5 years old, stands 8-10' and roughly the same spread. I havent seen any pecans from it yet. I've been told I'd have to graft it to see any pecans.
Any truth to that, or should I just wait and let nature do her thing? |

I'm not aware that they HAVE to be grafted. There're other pecans in the area around here that set fruit fine, so I'd think it'd still get what it needs.
Anyone on here have pecans on their property that might have advice for Squid? |

Neighbors have young pecan trees & they didn't produce until 3 yrs after planting.

Agh... grafted pecan trees bring bad memories for me...
My dad grafted about 5 of them 15, 20 years ago... I and others ended up cutting them down because the wood was so weak. They just fall apart and they were planted too close to the house. Just plant them far far away! |

| I just had a county extension agent out to my place to look it over and make recommendations before I get started, and he mentioned growing pecans, but he said they had to be grafted--that was the first time I'd ever heard that! So what's the bottom line? |

What is the purpose is grafting pecan? Do fruit trees in general need to be grafted?
