A co-worker asked an interesting question. He's begun to feed the birds and now has weeds all around where the seed drops. How would you suggest he keeps weeds from sprouting? Not sure what kind of seed is used; his wife buys it & puts is out for the birds.

Some of the bird seed will germinate; it is not weeds. They can hand-pick the plants or spray 10-20% vinegar in the area to kill the plants.

Most wild bird specialty stores sell a seed tray that hangs on the bottom of a feeder to catch the seed dropped by the birds. More seed is eaten this way and most of the germination problem is eliminated.

I feed only black-oil sunflower seed and do not have a probem with seed germination, although this may not always be the case.

Peanuts, shelled or in the shell are popular with many species, as is suet. A mixed offering of black-oil sunflower, peanutes and suet will attract a lot of birds with a minimum amount of seed germination problems.
