OK, I'm new. I have thought since I moved to this house about two years ago that the tree in question was a regular old Live Oak, mostly because there are a lot of those in the vicinity, my yard and the neighbor. I guess I never really looked that close, or at the canopy anyway. The bark and trunk looked right at eye level.
Last weekend I realized there are leaves falling off this thing that look like the pecan on the side of my house, only smaller. I looked up at this thing and I don't know, but it's no Live Oak. A lot of natives have real similar leaves as far as I can tell. I wish it was a hickory but I haven't seen any nuts, at all, of any variety. Just little crunchy things to step on.
I suspect it is some kind of oak but I'm sure 15 of you will look at this photo and know immediately. :D (sorry, those leaves fell off a couple of days ago).
This is a large tree, 35-40 feet tall probably, with thick multiple trunks that separate just above where it comes up through the concrete patio. I don't know what that white stuff in the photo is, I never really noticed it until I looked at this photo.
Thanx in advance,

Ash, maybe? OK, the first photo was lousy, let's try this again. And yes, I did pick some that the caterpillars have been working over but it was easy to reach. :D
Thanx everybody. |

| Hard to say without seeing the tree as a whole. Leaves could be a form of Ash, from their shape. |

| Does look like green ash. If fall color is yellow, that's probably the answer. Texas ash has more orange and red colors. |

I vote for ash. Since you thought it was a live oak, its more than likely to be Arizona ash. Both trees developed a rounded crown on a short trunk. Also, be sure to identify the seed.

Thanks kids, yeah the general concensus is some kind of ash with most people leaning toward green ash.
I always thought it was a Live Oak, but the next door neighbor has one of those about the same size as my ash and their canopies are so grown together I guess those little green leaves was all I was seeing. Next, I have a Live Oak for sure that I'm going to post photos of. It may have root flare problems, I'll be back later.
Thanx again.
