I live close to the coast and, therefore, have strong winds, on the average. I would say the average wind is 15-25 mph.
Anyone have recommendations for a tough rose? It does not have to have a strong scent, although it would be nice, but the petals need to
hold up under the aforementioned spec.'s.
I currently have Heart O'Gold's, Othello and another David Austin that I cannot remember. Anyway, the Heart O' Gold's do great even when they
are 10 feet tall....which they are now. The Othello are a middle of the pack the other David Austin fall apart when someone so much as breaths
on them.
I would like a medium to small rose that I can put in front of the Othello's and not fall apart on the first puff of wind.
Thanks for any input one may have. |

My first thought is to suggest that you avoid forms that are very thorny - consistent high winds can cause roses to impale themselves on their own thorns and shred the leaves. Then I guess you could consider bloom type - smaller more compact blooms will probably handle the wind better.
Do some research - Google "TAMU Earthkind roses" and see if any of those meet this criteria. Earthkind roses are amongst the toughest. Also Google "Antique Roses Emporium". Their sortable rose database should be a useful tool. Found/Antique roses will probably work best for you (Martha Gonzalez might be a good one come to think of it). |

| Thanks. The Master Gardener class that I am about to have recommends the Earthkind roses also. I will have to check them out. |
