Spring will be here soon and I would like to know the best ways to introduce nitrogen in order to make my st augustine lawn green and thick. I have been in this house for 4 years now, changing to an organic program from the previous owners chemical lawn care service. I cannot get the lawn to thicken and to green up!!

1) apply 1 cubic yard of compost per 1000 sqft. You can use wheelbarrow to dump in various spots and use leaf blower till they are gone. ONE TIME ONLY.

2) apply soybean meal at the rate of 15-20 lbs per 1000 sqft. You can get it cheap at animal feed store. Do this every 3 months starting Febraury.

3) Spray molasses. You can get unsulfured blackstrap type from the grocery stores. Use ortho dial sprayer and add water to molasses (50/50) to dilute molasses. Set at 2oz and spray till you're done with the whole bottle (one bottle for front and another for back yard). Do this whenever you put down soybean meal.

4) If you have St augustine, mow as high as your mower can go. 3 inches minimum. 4 inches is ideal.

5) water deeply and infrequently. If your lawn looks 50% wilted, water. It could be 1 week apart. It could be every month. It all depends on the weather.

That's it. Don't use any kind of chemicals as they will set organic program back.

Yes, greensand should work great for alkaline soil. Lowe's has the best price for that. You might want to get lava sand as well from there. Greensand sticks together like clay and lava helps break them up and easier to spread by hand like you're feeding chicken. At the rate 20lbs per 1000 sqft at a minimum. Maybe 40lbs per 1000 sqft for maximized benefits.
