I know that I should probably know the answer to this question, but I am going to ask it anyway. How or where do new bradford trees come from? Do they grow from the "fruit" that is present on the trees? I have a nice, large Bradford Pear in my yard. I would like to plant another one about 30 feet from this one. I have several young sprouts coming up in my yard, some as far as 4 feet from the main trunk of the tree. I carefully dug down to see if it had a root system, so it could be transplanted. I discovered that it was attached to the main root or shoot off the main root system. I would have had to cut the root into to transplant this sprout. Any suggestions, other than going and buying another tree at the local nursery?

The primary method is by seed. You can also take stem cuttings or grafting.
I have not had any success with root suckers coming up and forming into regular trees after transplanting. But what I did involved cutting roots, not just the sucker. I would want to ensure that I don't cause health problems to the mother ship. |
