Is there any reason not to use a good topsoil instead of a store-bought potting soil when planting in containers?

| A good potting soil also contain compost. I think if you just used topsoil that it would compact and dry out quicker. It also wouldn't have some of the nutrients that compost or compost-laden potting soil would have. |

In the hottest months, some of my container plants in potting soil need water twice a day or they wilt. I tried putting some in topsoil, and they need less than half the water. I see no difference in the health or growth rates. The only difference I've noticed is the weight of the pots.
