This looks like the perfect place for me to ask a question that's been bugging me for a while ... does one use "composted cow manure" as fertilizer to be applied directly to lawns, beds, or whatever? Or maybe as a good nitrogen source for a pile of chipped up limbs that I want to compost? For the latter use, would "fresh" horse manure work better than "composted cow manure?"

Since my husband and I live on a farm with cattle we have plenty of 'cow manure'. :wink: I use a lot of aged manure in my garden beds with very good results. A few times I have bought composted cow manure and used it on garden beds too so yes you can use composted manure in your gardens. I've never tried it on my lawn but now that I think about it I think I will try a little area and see how it does. I don't know anything about horse manure or how that would work.

To break down wood chips you sould use fresh cow manure. I have donated lhundreds of yards for soccer fields. And the only complaint was that the grass got so dense that the mowers were having a hard time.

If you're going to use compost on turf, there is a rule of thumb about how much to use...

1 cubic yard of compost per 1,000 square feet of turf.

This puts a thin layer 1/3 of an inch deep on average. When you have it spread out, use a push broom to get it off the grass blades. Even bermuda can be smothered out with too much compost.
