Home Remedy for Concrete Stains
Question from Mays Landing, New Jersey:
After putting Ironite on my lawn, some got on sidewalk. What can I use to remove the stain?
One home remedy for concrete rust stain is lemon juice. Squeeze or spray lemon juice on the stained area and leave for at least 5 minutes, then rinse with water. If this does not remove the rust stain, use vinegar or orange oil and follow the same procedure. If these don't work, then use commercial products that contain oxalic acid. Take proper safety measures and read the instructions on the label before using, but this is the same acid that is in spinach, rhubarb and wood sorrel. Also, next time don't use Ironite. The product used to be mine tailings full of heavy metals, but apparently now it is just a bag full of synthetic fertilizer materials - that obviously stain concrete.
Here are the ingredients taken right off the bag: Derived from Urea, Muriate of Potash, Calcium, Sulfate, Sodium Borate, Ferrous Sulfate, Iron Sucrate, Iron Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Manganese Oxide, Sodium Molybdate, Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Oxide.
Greensand is a much better iron source product, contains many other trace minerals, is organic and doesn't stain. Here's a link to retailers that carry organic products that are the state of the art in organic gardening.
