Daily Dirt: Vegetable Garden on Sloping Land
Question from Ardmore, Oklahoma: We have a gentle sloping piece of land that we want to grow a vegetable garden this spring. We have flattened out a place on the slope for the garden bed and have it all ready to plant the veggies. My question is, how should we plant the rows? Perpendicular to the slope or horizontal to the slope?
A: Beds should be running horizontal and curving with the contours of the slope. Running the beds perpendicular or up and down the slope will lead to severe erosion and lost production. |
