When my home was built a red oak was put in the front yard. This year the leaves didn't fall. I noticed some open sores on the trunk but the tree appears to be alive. I have added compost to the base, ariate, and planning to apply Gerritt Juice. I can post pics...please advise. Thanks.

Do give us some photos but applying the Sick Tree Treatment is most likely in order.
