A friend of mine asked me to check around for a rose that was cold tolerant and set blooms in the winter. She said she had heard there was both a white and a red blooming plant. Has anyone heard of such? I haven't. Short of having a greenhouse or living in Zone 10 I did know this was possible.

My Perle d'Or, an antique variety that is pale pinkish-salmon, blooms all year. When it gets down to about 30 degrees it will nip any buds that are forming, but as soon as it warms again it puts on new buds. I am rarely without blooms for more than a week or two. Of course, Robertson County where I live doesn't get quite as cold as Fort Worth.

I have heard this rose mentioned before but have not had the opportunity to try one. I am curious, how many hours of sun per day is the plant getting this time of year (Winter). How many hours of sun per day does it get in the summer? (Assuming it is in the ground and not being moved around in a pot.) Thanks!

You've heard it mentioned before probably because I mention it a lot! I just love this rose. You can find a picture of it on the web site of the Antique Rose Emporium, www.antiquerosemporium.com. Mine is planted in the ground, although it does stay small enough to be planted in a large container. It gets morning sun and afternoon shade, which means in the summer it gets an hour or two more sun than in the winter. I suppose it should be the other way 'round, but that's the way my garden is situated. I'd say no less than 6 or 7 hours of sun a day in the winter. Try it... you'll like it! (Smells good too.)
