American Beautyberry--sun or shade??

I'm getting conflicting information about the American Beautyberry. I thought HG said it was good for full sun to partial shade, but now I'm reading that it's an understory shrub so it likes more shade than sun.

I haven't planted it yet because I've been trying to sort it all out. Anyone out there have one in Texas? Where's it planted, and is it doing well?

Beautyberry trees are a common native in my area of Texas and they are understory shrubs, usually not more than 5-6 feet tall. The ones that are in more sun usually wilt pretty badly in the hot summer, and you won't find any growing in "full sun".
I have several growing in a wild area of my acre, they are great plants.

The plants that have popped up in my yard are all understory--part shade.

Thanks! I'll look around for a nice spot for it. I can't wait until fall---I saw one of these once and just fell in love with it. I've been waiting until I had a yard so I could have one of my very own!!

Gina, I have two in my very shaded back yard and they are WONDERFUL. The oldest one is loaded right now with very purple berries. The other one is a dwarf variety and I haven't noticed berries yet. But, they are great for a little splash of color and fill up an empty space nicely. It's almost fall!

Three years ago I started a wildscape in my backyard in San Antonio. I have 5 Beautiberries. They are all planted as understory but my trees are all small and provide no shade. The plants were 1 foot tall when planted and are now 3.5 feet tall and 4 feet wide. They are mulched and only occasionally wilt in full sun. I hand water them on those rare occasions. Mine get covered in berries but the birds don't leave them for long. Good luck.

I'm in Florida, 8B, and I've noticed beautybery here seems happiest when it's on the edge of a wooded area...for whatever that may be worth.
