What can I do to get rid of the large ant nest in my worm bin that is placed outside on the cement porch of a garden shed? The bin has been there for a couple of months and this is the first time of any sign of ants, and now it's a large nest in the shredded newsprint. At this point I don't see any ant trail, but I will look closer next time I'm out there. What will make them leave and not harm the worms?
Do you know what kind of ants they are yet? Fire ants will take up residence in a bin if it's not hot enough. I had that happen when I left mine outside in the spring a couple of years ago. I doused it with molasses and the thing went crazy and the ants disappeared, as well as the compost material. All that activity was just too much for them and broke down the compost in record time. If they are beneficial ants they shouldn't harm the worms. What kind of worms do you have?
I agree with the DE to get rid of the ants. I use it all the time in my bins and it works great and definitely does not hurt the worms.
