I would like to use a sheet of black plastic as a soil barrier to protect the inside of wooden containers used for gardening. Does anyone know if it is ok to use the black plastic near the root system when growing vegetables organically? Thanks!
With anything impenetrable (sp?) you have to worry about the roots staying too wet. Will the plastic interfere with the plants probably not. Will the plastic give off chemicals that the plants will take up, probably. Have I grow veggies in plastic, yes. Will I again, who knows.
One idea for drainage. Go to tropical fish supply store. Ask for the plastic air hoses. Buy the hose that's 1/4-1/2 inch diameter. Make hole in plastic and wood planter so the tube will drain from the soil to the outside.
Good luck.
