I got 10 yards of topsoil to add on the sunken areas in the lawn and for new garden bed last week and just noticed that there are brown furry things that almost looks like opened cigarette butt. Some are size of a dime and some are much larger. They weren't there 3 days ago....I was out of town for 3 days, and when I came back they were everywhere on the new topsoil.
Does anyone have any idea what they might be?

Some kind of fungus. You can turn it under and once you start using the soil it probably won't come back.
