I have chickens. They supply a great deal of my furtilizer. Can I add the manure straight to the garden and till it in or does it have to be composted. How long does it have to be composted? It has some straw in it. Does this make a difference? Thank you in advance for your help.

Because of the nature of bird wastes, it is considered hot and can burn when used fresh.

It is considered composted when it smells good. I would mix it with leaves, but I have yards of leaves. Straw would be fine.

I would not till it either. I would use it as a top dressing.

I have chickens also and mine has straw with it also but I let it age. If I use it fresh I use it sparingly and I don't get it to close to the roots I also use it as a top dressing. I also compost it with all my other manures and table scrapes. I use it on my azaleas and my blossoms are bright and last for weeks.
