Photo from a listener. The wasps cannot take off from the ground because of the size of the prey. They climb up, push off and fly as far as they can and then do it again until they reach the hole in the ground where the nest is.

I have photos of other stages of the life cycle, but I never could catch them carrying cicadas. This is a lucky shot!
