Constant pruning back is your fate with the neighbor's yard.

In your yard you will have to dig the roots out. My next door neighbor had both bamboo and English ivy for decades. One day he decided to redo it and he hired a team of guys to dig it out. I thought they were wasting their time, but they succeeded in one sweep.
