The weeds you are seeing now germinated last fall, so it is too late for them. If you had a big crop of crabgrass last summer, then you can put CGM down now for that. You may have missed your opportunity if you live south of Austin. Please tell us where you live so we can help you better.

I'm not sure what the product at Home Depot is "blended" with. Generally your best prices for CGM will be found at your local feed store. Recently it's been about $20-$25 for a 50# bag in the DFW area. I've never investigated any places for large quantites/pricing, but others might have some advice on that.
