Has anyone heard of adding cottonseed meal to the soil?
I have a friend in Georgia that is waiting for me to find out something. He heard it was a good soil conditioner, then thought he had better wait about applying it to ask me what it does.
I have no information about cottonseed meal, and know nothing about it except it is good livestock feed.
Can anyone help me with this problem?
If it IS good for the soil, I will add some to my soil too.

Cottonseed Meal
A good natural fertilizer with an acid pH. Analysis will vary and ranges from 6-2-1 to 7-2-2 with trace elements. Does have an odor, but is a good organic source of nitrogen.


I would have the soil tested before adding a large amount to your garden.

The only concern I have heard about cottonseed meal is the herbicides used to defoliate the cotton prior to harvesting. I am not sure what it is that they use, but so far, cottonseed meal is deemed acceptable in an organic program.

In my opinion, there is nothing better than composted manure (unless it is the manure of cows who ingested coastal Bermuda hay which is tainted with picloram. Even after passing through the cows four stomachs, this stuff does not break down and has caused many problems. There is a test you can do to see if it is present. What you do is make a tea out of the compost you plan to use. Get a peanut plant and water it with this tea. If it dies, it is tainted compost and should be discarded. The peanut plant will wilt and show signs of decline within an hour of "drinking" the tea.
