I had four large crepe myrtles planted earlier this year and they don't look like they are taking off. I was told they are not getting enough water.
I've seen alot of trees and crepe myrtles on the road medians with a built up ring that looks like fine wood chips. What is this mixture made of and would that help?
What you are seeing is mulch, probably cedar. It is for keeping the soil wet, warm, cool, etc. Yes you want to do that. Also, go to the Dirtdoctor.com home page and do a search for "crepe myrtles" and "sick tree treatment". And make sure they weren't set too deeply in the ground. With the rain we have been getting they should be getting enough water.

Hi JC!! I have Crepe Myrtle trees too. Mine are young and seem to be pretty slow growers. I doubt that mine are the same kind I see along the highways. I bought mine on sale. I use the cedar mulch around mine too. You can buy the cedar mulch from Wal Mart, Lowe's, Home Depot, or probably any garden center or nursery. It really does help retain moisture. Good luck with yours!!
I just wanted to say that if you hust planted them this year, then you may not se a whole lot of action/ blooming until next year. This happened to me and I think it was because the plant was establishing its root system first.
Since they were planted this year I thought this may be the case. It's just that these were larger crepe myrtles and thought they may adjust right away. I guess I'll know next year. Thank you for your comments.
