I've read 1 cup per 100 gallons water and couple ounces per 100 gallons water and free choice drinking for 48 hours. We have 8week old goats and adults 4 pregnant. Couple ounces and 1 cup are different amounts. Please clarify? Sharon Sandmann, Whitesboro, Tx. Thanks .

One cup/100 gals of water is correct. I
do basic H, but I also do DE every day.
If you live in or around Whitesboro, you
can get DE from Dennards.

I am new to this site, so I JUST HOPE I do it right. I am trying to reply to BLUESTEM: How to feed cows DE if they are fed grass. I give my grassfed cattle the following: DE, dry molassas, kelp, salt and sometimes sulfer in a stainless steel pan in the pasture. I hope eventually to offer it in individual compartments under a cover-roof. But for now, if it gets rained in, they just come drink it later. Another tip, if you keep them "trained" to come to a bucket with dry molassas in it, you can catch escapees as easily as traditionally fed cows.

We want the cows to come up everyday -
unless t-storms or bitter cold - and we put
DE in ground up alfalfa along with beet
pulp, dried molasses, and humates. Each
cow get more DE this way. Also humates
help with minerals and as detoxifing agent.
Cows looked better this year as they shed
off than in past years.

My response is two-fold:

1) What is "basic H"?

2) I heard from a reputable source (she is very much into the "natural way")that DE does not work when given orally for internal parasites. She has tried it with her LaMancha goats and measured her success with fecal testing that she performs herself. She gave them DE at the appropriate doseage and saw little/no decrease in parasite population. The reason she gives is that the way DE works is that it works by drying out the bugs you are targeting. Basically, they die of dehydration when the DE cuts into their delicate exoskeleton. You can check on this by looking at www.fiascofarm.com

Basic H is from Shakley. It is a combination
of amino acids and is used as an organic
cleaner but it is great for worming animals.
We poor 1 cup to 100 gals of water. I use
this to make sure the DE didn't miss anything.

I don't know your friend but DE works.
Even TX A& M did a study with goats and it
was successful. I have used it for 6 years
on the horses and we have not had a bot
fly in 5 years. The cows have done well
and are parasite free, and I will start using
it on the goats that we are getting from
Montana next month.

Why don't you consult Joel Salatin's book on
"Salad Bar Beef", or the lady from Down Under -
I think her name is Corey or Corley.
