Is there a grass that is more drought resistant than St. Augustine for the Houston area? I have been organic for over 10 years, but my lawn is on a slight slope and I find myself having to triage-water the slopes every other day. Houston has just been put under voluntary water rationing, requesting that we water lawns only two days a week (with temperatures in the high 90s). If it were up to me, I'd till it all under and plant vegetables in the front yard, but homeowner associations, to date, require
"lawns". IF drought-frought summers are "the new normal", what do we do?

Can you terrace the slope and plant more drought tolerant natives?

Both bermuda and buffalo are acceptable turf grasses. I assume your slope faces south. That slope can be brutal to St Augustine.

Good bermuda comes as a sod. You can find it most anywhere. Good buffalo for down here is called Tech Turf. You'll have to call around. It is not produced locally (that I know of). It costs more than bermuda but makes a very nice, dense turf. Both need full sun.

'Raleigh' st augustine grass is most commonly sold everywhere because it is the cheapest but it has the worst drought tolerance.
