We have a Cherokee pecan that has been doing exceptionally well
this year and is so full the limbs are sagging. They are the huge
papershell variety. The problem is pecans have been falling for
a couple of weeks now. The hulls are dry and split, but the pecans
smell of chlorophyl. They are meaty and well formed, but are a
little spongy. Some even taste NASTY!
Any suggestions?

Has this happened in previous years? If you did not get a good polination, early nut drop can occur. As much as 25% of the total nut crop can be shed during these early drops. Environmental stresses can increase the nut drop. Think about what may be different this year from previous good years.

Come to think of it, we had 2 hard late freezes this year. I know the
early leaves got fried, but can't remember if they were trying to bloom
yet or not. We also had 13 or more weeks of no rain this spring.

We were really surprised to get any pecans. The other 2 natives are
practically bare.

No problem, I've got dozens of trees and they all seem to be doing as well as last year but the weather and other conditions have also been similar.
