Since subsequent readers do not have the benefit of the newsletter, I would suggest for large areas to have it scraped away by a tractor and box blade (also called a landscaper's blade). If it's a small area you can spray it with vinegar on a hot sunny day. Or you can smother it out with several inches of sand or sand and mulch. You would have to be careful of applying sand because it changes the drainage and grade of the area. Mulch will eventually decompose and disappear but sand will persist and change the grade.
I guess the approach would depend on what you intended to do with the area afterward.
