I want to have various gardens and mulched areas in my back yard, so I want to get rid of my grass. I don't want to spray chemicals; I tried the weed fabric - rain just puddles up; and I don't want to use a sod cutter or rototiller and kill the bugs and worms in the lawn. I've even tried covering the yard with cardboard but as soon as the cardboard got a little bit warped, the wind pulled out the stakes. My next idea is to cut the grass as short as possible and cover it with about four inches of mulch. However, I'm afraid that after all that work, the grass may still grow through the mulch. Is there anything else I can do? FYI - I've got two dogs and children. Thanks!

You might try 20% vinegar. I use it for weeds and under fences. If you are worried about the "good" bugs do small patches. This will not pollute your yard.
