You have to dig them out. Deeper water will keep them from growing back. I have tried salt, and it does kill them. But, it didn't keep things from growing back. You might be able to locate a back-hoe operator who will come do this for you...at $40-$50 per hour, it's not a time consuming job. So, it might be worth the money. Plus, the dirt that he pulls out of the pond is as good as compost.
