Hi, I'm trying to get started on a vegetable garden (a little late!) and my first step is to kill off the grass/weeds that are growing in the section of my yard where I want the garden. I've thought about staking out black plastic but not sure how long that takes - also I'm in a windy area (south of Weatherford) and don't know how many rocks it'd take to hold the plastic down! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Solarization doesn't work very well except in the heat of summer and takes several weeks to be effective. Better to just scrap off 2", toss that material in the compost pile and mix in the compost and other amendments. With this method you can plant right away.
