I am not a big fan of Bermuda grass, in fact I think I have spent most of my life trying to get rid of it. However, times change. I have a large area, approx 2 acres of open ground that has a mix of weeds and rocks. I have removed most rocks and weeds and am looking to seed bermuda grass. Here is the question. What "variety" is best. I am in San Antonio, TX over the Aquifer Recharge Zone (that means lots of limestone about 4 inches down) and am looking for the most drought tolerent, good looking type. Any help?

Just about all bermuda SEED is created equal. The seeded variety is called common. The hybrids come as sod and are a little nicer to look at. Why? Because they don't send up the seed heads like common does. What part of town are you in (more close to 281 or 10?) If you are interested in a bermuda sod, maybe I can direct you somewhere.

In any case, the lower you mow it the happier you'll be with it. Golf greens are hybrid bermuda mowed at 1/16 inch. You can go higher than that but I would not go higher than 3/4 inch. Use a reel mower for best results.

Bermuda can use as much protein as you can give it. If you want it to look dark green, plan to fertilize heavily with soy bean meal or corn gluten meal on a monthly basis.

Try to water only once weekly. Bermuda can handle no water so weekly watering should be great. I live down by the Quarry Market and have similar soil in 80% shade. I water 1-3 hours a week per zone depending on the heat and humidity.

If you are close to Hwy 281, visit Mumme's for your feeds. If you're closer to 10, look at that feed store on the highway in Boerne (can't remember the name).

David, thanks. I am just off bitters and 281, I spent a long time looking at the different "types" of seed, (Princess 77, blackjack, sahara et al), decided on a mix of Princess 77 and sahara for the area close to the house. I DO need some sod, to go around the drainage areas. Hope you did not get washed away yesterday, I spent the weekend doing some soil prep and lost all the work due to run-off, of course that is why I need the sod. I was also going to try a flat of the Turfalo from Fanicks and see how it does. I figure if it does well I can take plugs from that and spread it around the yard. I have been building a large compost pile, (tree branches-chipped, leaves, horse maneuer, pine shavings, coffee grounds, molasses, and some alfalfa pellets) when It gets good and cooked I plan on top dressing the bermuda. I figure it will be done about the same time the bermuda has grown enough. I do use Mummes when I need to but prefer Ful-o-Pep (where I get my horse feed and less expensive).

I live in Cibolo. My builder put in the common bermuda and it was ok. Last year my wife ordered LaPrima bermuda grass seed. We put it out in June and then we got blasted with the drought and high temps in July and August so we werent sure how well it was going to do.

I now would highly recommend the LaPrima. We have the most beautiful lawn on the block. LaPrima is a very dark green and it has come in nice and thick. My wife ordered LaPrima from the internet and now she cant remember the site.
