Just wondering if I can cover some unused patches in my perennial garden w/cardboard to stop the irritating weeds/burmuda grass from overtaking the garden until I gradually fill it all up. I've tried to be organic for 15 years now, and don't want to spoil all the care put into the soil. Will it stop the weeds, should I just use newspaper and mulch, or some of the weed fabric?

Cardboard (uncoated) works quite well for blocking some weeds, but not so well with Bermuda. Lay it down, overlapping where to pieces join, and cover with compost or mulch. I usually wet it down after all is in place, but I don't know that is a requirement. If left without disturbing, it will breakdown and disappear.

Thx. Any good alternative for Burmuda grass. The only thing I've found that works thus far is to cover it in black roofing plastic for a few months and literally starve/burn it to death. Nothing else has worked...?

In a beds where the dirt is loose, I just hand pull it. I have a nifty tool, I purchased years ago, which allows me to run the blade just below the soil's surface while I pull on the above ground growth. Still have to stay on top of the Bermuda. It will come up from beneath a solid 4"-5" layer of mulch. Tough customer.
