I don't have quite as much turf as you (only 8500sqft here), but I just use the Scotts 2000 drop spreader. Haven't spread lava sand yet, but I did spread green sand with it. Best tip I can give you is to not fill the hopper all the way up with sand. I found that filling about half at a time worked great.

The Scott's whirly spreader seems to work the best. It has a small beater wire at the bottom which helps to keep product moving. The biggest problem I have encountered is wet or damp product. This will clog most any spreader. Use dry product!

My Scotts spreader works ok, I guess, I just can't see any difference in the settings. Same am't comes out no matter if its on 3 or 12...
I did notice the other day the the plastic is cracked so I suppose using it as a wheelbarrow was not too good for it.
